Celebrating a Second Chance

Nearly 80% of formerly incarcerated people and their families report being denied housing due to a criminal conviction. That’s according to a 2015 study led by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Forward Together, and Research Action Design, which also found that formerly incarcerated people are 10 to 13 times more likely to experience homelessness than those who have not been incarcerated.

Mitigating Extreme Heat Risk in Historically Redlined Areas

Last year was the hottest year on record , and 2024 has a one-in-three chance of being even hotter. As temperatures increase and climate change worsens, extreme heat events will occur with more frequency and intensity, having an outsized impact in dense, urban areas. Urban neighborhoods face increased temperatures due to building concentrations and a lack of green space, creating a phenomenon referred to as the urban heat island effect. Neighborhoods with a high number of low-income residents of color experience more intense heat island effects. This is not by chance, but is a result of deliberate, discriminatory housing policies that have impacted people of color, pushing them into vulnerable neighborhoods prone to extreme heat exacerbated by climate change.

Cutting the ribbon at Legacy at Twin Rivers

Enterprise Cuts the Ribbon on One Million Homes

Last month, Alemseged Desta addressed a crowd of hundreds spilling out from under a canopy tent, all there to celebrate two important milestones: the ribbon cutting for the redeveloped Legacy at Twin Rivers, a mixed-income, multifamily community in Columbia, Maryland – the city Enterprise founder Jim Rouse created – and Enterprise’s creation of one million homes. This theme of legacy—of community, continuity, and commitment—was embraced in the naming of Desta’s new home, and by everyone gathered for the occasion.
