Mark Matel
Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation

Mark Matel is a real estate development project manager at Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation (NCDC) in Roxbury, Mass., where he was an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow from 2012-2014. He has been deeply involved in the development of Bartlett Place, re-visioning a former transit yard into a “creative village” that is a sustainable residential and commercial node in Roxbury.

He has worked with local residents to plan temporary events that bring awareness to the Bartlett Place site and test programming for the proposed public plaza on the site. The events have helped to build identity around the concept of this place as a creative village and have encouraged community participation in the process. Mark has engaged with the community at all levels, from residents to the city redevelopment authority.

As an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow, Mark presented strategies used on the Bartlett project as a community development tool at various conferences and venues such as the EPA Forum, Mass DEP Forum, FARROC Design Competition in N.Y., Planners Conference in N.Y., St. Paul Creative Economy Initiative and Boston Art in Public Places Forum. He has also helped coordinate smaller projects at NCDC geared toward passive house goals. During his fellowship he raised over $6,000,000 in pre-development capital and grants for the Bartlett Place project. He also helped co-organize Bartlett Events, which coordinates community-led activities with public art and urban gardening.

Mark has earned several distinctions, including Alpha Rho Chi Medal for Service in Architecture, Design Stewardship Award and MACDC’s Outstanding Leadership in Community Development 2013. Mark holds a master’s degree in architecture from Hampton University and a Master of Design Build from Auburn University.
