Brita Carlson
A Community of Friends
Los Angeles

“Through my work with A Community of Friends (ACOF), I hope to develop a better appreciation for the intricate and essential relationship between design and its impact on our communities. This fellowship lays the foundation for me to become a stronger designer, a better community leader and an advocate for social and environmental change.”

Hosted by A Community of Friends (ACOF), a Los Angeles-based organization focused on supportive housing for people with mental illness, Brita is working to raise the bar on design and sustainability in all of ACOF’s projects. Through facilitated discussions and the development of design standards, Brita is integrating processes for ACOF to consistently achieve high standards in all future projects. Brita also works to explore new avenues for ACOF to provide additional community benefits through its developments, including public art, commercial space, community gardens and green spaces.

Prior to becoming an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow, Brita was Project Manager and Architectural Assistant for Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven. As a Project Manager and Architectural Assistant, Brita managed the rehabilitation of several historic one- and two-family homes for low- to moderate-income first-time homebuyers. Brita received her Master of Architecture from University of Oregon, where she helped to manage designBridge, a student-led community design-build organization.
