“The work I want to do as an architect is centered on creating a diverse set of projects that provide inspiring, enjoyable and healthy spaces for people to call home, while also enhancing a community’s sense of ‘place’ and going far beyond LEED – so FCH’s mission and aspirations really speak to me.”

Hilary is hosted by First Community Housing in San Jose, Calif. Since 1986, FCH has created housing for more than 3,200 low-income residents in 16 affordable rental housing developments throughout the San Francisco Bay region. Hilary supports FCH’s efforts to develop and build affordable housing that emphasizes sustainability.  She works with FCH to raise standards and practices for design excellence, assist in building the first Living Building Challenge-certified affordable housing and create compelling graphics to illustrate building features which can be used to educate the public and the profession.

Bringing her experience in architecture and green building project management, Hilary helps to enrich and deepen the capacity of First Community Housing to develop and build award winning, truly inspiring affordable housing projects that enhance the overall quality of ‘place’ in the Bay Area. Her design process and vision for architecture includes reading the past to inform evolving notions of place-making, modern regionalism, infill and adaptive reuse as well as the idea that best design is holistic and must balance an intimate awareness of materials, history, culture and the environment.

With a Master of Architecture from the University of New Mexico and six years of design experience with SMPC Architects in Albuquerque, Hilary comes prepared to build design capacity at First Community Housing. She is a LEED AP BD+C and has won several awards for her design work, including the Drylands Design Competition, Natural Talent Design Competition and Best in Show at the NM Green Built Tour.  She is also a New Mexico Heritage Scholar and Udall Scholar.
