Bronx-Based Housing Providers Connect to Respond to Covid-19

Covid-19 is posing unique challenges for providers of affordable housing, as they work to maintain their properties with lower rent collection, reduced staff, and the need to maintain social distancing. But it is more critical than ever to ensure that these organizations have the resources and support that they need to continue providing stable housing and services for low-income tenants.

Connecting virtually and sharing resources is critical to shaping a path forward at this time. To facilitate this connection between providers, Enterprise and the Office of the Bronx Borough President co-hosted a virtual forum last month for over 20 community development corporations and community-based organizations across the Bronx.

The forum addressed property management, finance and operations, tenant care and communication, rental assistance, and remote and technological capacity amid Covid-19. Participants discussed broader concerns about ensuring that constantly-shifting policies and guidelines remain easily accessible and clear. On May 12, the Office of the Bronx Borough President released “Bronx Housing Organizations Adapting and Recovering Amid COVID-19,” a report capturing key issues addressed during the virtual forum.

As affordable housing providers navigate the evolving environment, Enterprise is committed to advocating for our partners and sharing out resources that are responsive to the range of needs expressed during the virtual forum. Access to timely and accurate information is integral for supporting our partners during this challenging time. Several organizations are working to aggregate and share information and resources as they become available, including Enterprise New York

This forum was an opportunity for organizations on the ground in the Bronx to share challenges and strategies among peers at a time when it is important for housing and service providers to communicate with one another and with government officials. Moving forward, this cohort will continue to brainstorm ways to better align resources with tenant needs and is working to leverage the Bronx Community Relief Effort, which aims to raise $10 million to fill financing gaps to meet essential community needs.

We thank the organizations that participated and looks forward to continuing our partnership in response to Covid-19.
