More than 2.4 million Native Americans live on or near tribal land. They face some of the worst housing conditions in our country.
- Unemployment rate is double the national average.
- One-third live in poverty.
- 40% live in overcrowded or dilapidated housing.
- Basic infrastructure, including water, sewer and roads, are often severely inadequate.
- Fewer than 2,000 mortgages have been closed on tribal lands where there is an immediate need for at least 200,000 decent, affordable homes.
- Mortgages to enable homeownership are difficult to come by–less than one-fourth of all tribes in the country have legal systems that permit government or conventional mortgages.
Enterprise has raised and invested $88.3 million in grants, loans and equity in Native American communities to leverage an additional $10.6 million of resources for housing and over $1.7 million in economic development start-up projects. This has helped create or preserve close to 1,800 for 54 tribes in 20 states.
Enterprise’s New Mexico program serves as a model of other emerging Native American programs. Lessons learned are applied to the development and execution of work in California, Alaska, Idaho, Arizona, Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota.
