Statement from Terri Ludwig, president & CEO of Enterprise Community Partners, on the confirmation of Dr. Ben Carson as secretary of Housing and Urban Development

March 2, 2017 - For over three decades, Enterprise has focused on building communities of opportunity across the country, including through an extensive partnership with HUD. We congratulate newly confirmed Secretary Ben Carson and look forward to collaborating with HUD under his leadership to make well-designed homes affordable. We’ll work to ensure the homes are in thriving communities connected to good schools, jobs, transit and health care.

We are encouraged by Secretary Carson’s commitment “to make America’s neighborhoods stronger and more inclusive,” and we agree that doing so requires a holistic approach to addressing issues like jobs, health care, education and transportation and how they connect to housing. Secretary Carson's distinguished background in health care uniquely positions him to understand the effect a family’s environment has on their ability to thrive.

Secretary Carson’s support of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit), America’s primary tool for incentivizing private investment in affordable housing, is a strong first step toward protecting and strengthening resources for the creation and preservation of affordable homes. We will work with him to build on the success of the Housing Credit and other public-private partnerships “that are working so that we can multiply them across the country,” as he suggested he would do during his confirmation hearing.

Since currently only one in four families eligible for HUD assistance obtains it, we urge Secretary Carson to ensure that the department receives sufficient funding. Enterprise will also partner with HUD to advocate for the inclusion of housing in any infrastructure proposal, recognizing its immediate and tangible benefits for communities and local economies.

We wish Secretary Carson the best as he builds out his leadership team.
