Enterprise worked with the City of Albuquerque and local residents to create the Sawmill Community Land Trust in 1995. The Trust acquired 27 acres of land and created the neighborhood Arbolera de Vida Orchard (Orchard of Life), building 26 single-family homes around an inviting plaza with sales prices ranging from $65,000 to $95,000. Homes are available only to first-time homebuyers who earn less than 80 percent of the area’s average income. The Trust teaches practical homeowner skills and sound money management so families who couldn't imagine homeownership now occupy attractive, environmentally friendly homes in a safe neighborhood. The Trust is now engaged in developing an additional 24 homes in its second phase and has completed constructing a 60-apartment live/work project for local artisans.
Sawmill Land Trust’s newest projects incorporate Green Communities building standards and earned a Green grant from Enterprise. Created by Enterprise, the Natural Resource Defense Council and other partners, Green Communities is transforming the way communities think about, design and build affordable housing. Green Communities will provide $555 million of financing, equity, and grants to developers to build more than 8,500 rental and for-sale homes that promote health, conserve energy and natural resources, and enhance access to jobs, schools, and services.
