The Fund provides financing to developers who acquire land or buildings for development to replace housing that was lost or severely damaged due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Across the region, Enterprise has provided more than $2 million in grants and invested more than $7.5 million in loans to support the recovery and rebuilding work of our Gulf Coast partners. Nearly 2,000 affordable homes will be in design and development this summer.
- Enterprise and national and local partners created a pilot providing modular homes and gap financing for low-income families in Pass Christian, Miss. So far, HomeAgain, an organization formed with Enterprise Corporation of the Delta (no relation), Mercy Housing, NeighborWorks America and Enterprise, has developed or secured funding for 70 modular homes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
- Enterprise helped secure Gulf Opportunity Zone Low-Income Housing Tax Credits for nine affordable senior housing developments in New Orleans with almost 1,000 apartments. The homes will be renovated or redeveloped by Providence Community Housing, a new nonprofit organization formed with Enterprise’s assistance. Enterprise joined with partners to successfully urge Congress to extend the deadline for the tax credits.
- HUD selected Enterprise and Providence Community Housing to redevelop the Lafitte public housing development and New Orleans’ surrounding Treme community. Enterprise and Providence have pledged one-to-one replacement of all subsidized apartments for all 865 former residents. Extensive outreach began in 2006 and will continue during and after the redevelopment. Residents also will have access to a wide offering of case-management services, such as job placement, after school programs and medical care.
- Enterprise grants, loans and technical assistance have allowed our partners to fund or begin planning additional homes. These partners include the Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, Biloxi Housing Authority and Humanitas.
At a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee in early 2007, Enterprise President and CEO Doris Koo underscored the need for a comprehensive rebuilding approach. Preserving affordability for low- and moderate-income residents does not mean returning to the pre-storm poverty and isolation prevalent in many communities, Koo said: “We must collectively work to build healthier and safer mixed-income neighborhoods that allow low-income families equitable access to jobs, schools, transportation and services.”
