Home » Local Work » Denver : Introduction

During the 1990s, increases in housing prices far exceeded wage increases. By 2005, Denver was named one of the 10 most over-priced places to live in the country. One in nine Denver households, all of them low-income, pays more than 50 percent of their income for housing, often at the expense of other basic necessities such as food, clothing and health care.

We are grateful to the many partners that support our work in Denver.

Affordable Housing Week 2008
Enterprise is proud to organize Affordable Housing Week 2008. The week, June 1-7, is designed to highlight local programs that support affordable housing in Denver and its surrounding areas.

Accomplishments
Over the past 12 years, Enterprise has invested more than $109 million in Denver.

  • We have provided funds to help build, rehabilitate or preserve 5,500 affordable for-sale and rental homes in metro Denver and to prepare 1,100 low-income families for homeownership.
  • We provided another $41 million in equity in other parts of Colorado, enabling the production of more than 800 additional affordable homes statewide.
  • Enterprise is partnering with the Center for Transit Oriented Development to develop policy recommendations and financing tools to facilitate the incorporation of affordable housing in transit oriented development (TOD) that will result from the $5 billion expansion of metro Denver’s rail and bus system. Center for Transit-Oriented Development report (PDF, 2KB, March 2007)
  • Enterprise is partnering with ULI Colorado on the Workforce Housing Initiative to promote the development of workforce housing in metro Denver.

Success Story
Full-time employee, part-time student and cancer survivor Peggy Harper attributes her ability to ‘do it all’ to the stability provided by her home at Hiddenbrook Apartments. Peggy has lived in the Hiddenbrook apartment complex, owned and operated by Hope Communities, an Enterprise grantee, for four years.

Stable housing has made a world of difference for Peggy, but an apartment is not all she has gained from living in affordable housing. Peggy is also truly part of a community. A fellow resident encouraged Peggy to attend a health fair that provided free mammograms. As a result, her cancer was detected in time to treat it. Peggy was also able to learn about computers through classes taught at Hiddenbrook, and a fellow resident helped Peggy revamp her computer so she could work on her new passion, graphic design.

Certainly, juggling a job, classes and cancer treatments is difficult, but according to Peggy, “Living here allows me to take care of myself - it allows me to do things that make the struggle worth it.”

Local Collaborations
Statewide, Enterprise staff participate in organizations and committees that shape Colorado’s future development: the City of Denver’s Housing Plan Task Force and Commission to End Homelessness, Housing Colorado!, and many more.  Enterprise also contributes to future development of the area through its research efforts, which provide decision makers with a more complete picture of the need for affordable housing in metro Denver and beyond.
