Dallas is located within one of the nation's fastest-growing areas: the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. While North Dallas has boomed, South and West Dallas have suffered from neglect, and challenges persist. More than 30 percent of families with children live near or below poverty, and only 43 percent of residents own their own homes, well below the national rate of almost 70 percent. More than 60 percent of the city's homes are valued at $50,000 or less, and many of those are uninhabitable and concentrated in unsafe neighborhoods.

Enterprise has invested $65 million in Dallas over the past 17 years to help:
- 5,000 families to become first-time homebuyers through management of the City of Dallas Mortgage Assistance Program.
- Provide affordable housing opportunities to an additional 4,500 families.
- Create the Dallas Community Development Partnership (DCDP) to bring critical resources to eight community organizations that have produced more than 1,300 affordable homes between 2003 to 2004, a 25 percent increase in the city's housing production in just three years.
Lawanda Strahn and her three children became the 5,000th family to achieve homeownership through the Enterprise and City of Dallas Mortgage Assistance Program when they purchased their new, 1,500 sq. ft. home in South Dallas.
"My kids and I have really worked to make this happen—I work while they are at school and we work together in my Mom's restaurant on the weekends. Because we have done this as a family, getting the home was that much more exciting."
Lawanda Strahn
