After a 1985 study revealed the need for a new way to provide affordable places to live, Columbus officials sought out a best-practice model at the Columbia, Maryland-based Enterprise Community Partners (previously The Enterprise Foundation), which was founded by philanthropist and urban developer James Rouse. In 1987, Rouse came to Columbus to help leaders establish a similar organization, known as the Columbus Housing Partnership (CHP).
Enterprise continues to mentor, invest in and support CHP's efforts to this day. Columbus Housing Partnership has been committed to meeting the needs of our community for affordable housing and home ownership opportunities for more than 18 years, by adding nearly 3,500 affordable homes to the Columbus market. Through its activities, Columbus Housing Partnership is a partner in building communities and enhancing the lives of its residents.
Enterprise Columbus helped access $12.5 million of New Markets Tax Credits financing for Ohio State University's Gateway project in 2004. The area has a poverty rate of 46 percent and median income that is 71 percent below the state median income. This mixed-use project will provide needed retail, residential and entertainment services and will create numerous short- and long-term employment opportunities for residents.
