Take Action to Protect the HOME Program

The Trump Administration released last week its Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 budget blueprint that proposes deep cuts to many HUD programs and the elimination of the HOME Program.  Here are some concrete actions you can take now to advocate for HOME as Congress begins work on FY 2018 appropriations.

Sign your organization onto the HOME Coalition National Sign-On Letter.  The HOME Coalition is leading a national sign-on letter for state and local organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to send House and Senate Appropriations THUD Subcommittee leaders urging Congress to reject the Administration’s proposal to eliminate HOME and restore its funding to at least $1.2 billion in FY 2018.  Please sign on to the letter here.

Contact your Members of Congress in support of HOME funding. This year a record 43 Senators signed on to the Dear Colleague letter sponsored by Senators Coons (D-DE) and Feinstein (D-CA) requesting $1.2 billion for HOME in FY 2018. In the House, 108 Representatives signed on to Rep. Fudge's (D-OH-11) letter in support of HOME. Your Members of Congress still need to hear the importance of HOME funding, so continue reaching out to your Member's district and DC offices.

Here is a sample outreach letter to aid you in your advocacy.

Talk to Your Members of Congress during Spring Recess. Congress is in recess starting April 10.  Please meet with them and consider inviting them to properties funded with HOME.  Members of Congress consistently tell us that property visits are the most important thing we can do to gain members’ support for these programs. You are often in a unique position to explain to lawmakers how HOME benefits their community and the impact that elimination of or cuts would have on vulnerable populations.

Submit a HOME Success Story: We are looking to share more HOME Success Stories and need your help. Stories that tell a personal story showing how HOME was changed someone's life by creating access to safe and affordable housing is a powerful advocacy tool for the program. Please submit stories using this template to Clay Kerchof (
